- Donald Trump [1] was inaugurated as the 45th president on Friday morning. Capping off a contentious campaign, Trump's swearing in went without any surprises; however, the ceremony was rained out. During his speech, Trump painted a bleak picture of America and reiterated his RNC promise that he alone would save the country from what he referred to as "this American carnage." [2]
- Eight people who were trapped by an avalanche's snowfall in Italy were found alive on Friday morning. Following an earthquake in central Italy, the avalanche buried a hotel and 20 people were originally reported missing. So far, rescuers have saved 10 people from the Rigopiano Hotel [3], according to the BBC.
- Alec Baldwin [4], Mark Ruffalo [5], Cher, and Robert De Niro [6] joined thousands of demonstrators in New York City to protest Trump's inauguration on Thursday evening. After performing his astonishingly accurate impersonation of Trump, Baldwin told the crowd that he was "a bad example of this country and this city [7]," according to the Hollywood Reporter. The crowd gathered half a mile from Trump Tower.
- The notorious drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán was extradited to NYC on Thursday afternoon. Guzmán, who was the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, was arrested in Mexico after escaping prison in 2015. Facing a long list of charges, Guzmán will be prosecuted by the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn [8], reports the New York Times.
- After a video appearing to show a German Shepherd being forced into raging water on the set of A Dog's Purpose [9] surfaced this week, Universal Pictures canceled [10] the film's premiere. The video, obtained by TMZ, shows a trainer forcing a dog that's visibly panicking into water. PETA encouraged people to boycott the film after the video went viral and Josh Gad, who voices one of the dogs in the movie, expressed his own outrage on Twitter.
