The Beautiful Story Behind This Paralyzed Veteran's Dying Wish

As Vietnam veteran Roberto Gonzales lay dying over the weekend, he had one final request: to see his cherished horses Sugar and Ringo. He got that wish thanks to the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, which arranged for him to see them from his hospital bed.

Gonzalez was drafted in 1970 and shot months into his Vietnam service [3], leaving him paralyzed, reports the local Texas news station WOAI. For the past 30 to 40 years, he and his wife, Rosario, have been training and racing horses.

His organs are now failing him and he is in critical condition, but for a moment, he was able to say goodbye to his beloved animals. "When the horse came up to him he actually opened his eyes. They came up to him and I think they were actually kissing him," Rosario told WOAI.
