One week after suffering a heart attack on Christmas Eve [1], activist Erica Garner passed away on Dec. 30 at the age of 27, according to a statement shared by family members on her Twitter account [2]. Erica was known for speaking out against police brutality after the widely publicized death of her father, Eric, who in 2014 was killed when NYPD officers put him in a chokehold [3] while arresting him under the suspicion that he was illegally selling cigarettes. He repeatedly uttered the words "I can't breathe" before he lost consciousness.
After footage of her father's death went viral, Erica led various protests against police brutality and became a prominent figure in the Black Lives Matter movement. Immediately following her passing, her family shared a series of tweets from her official Twitter account, noting how she never received justice following her father's death.
Erica the world loves you. I love you. I am glad you came into our lives. May you find the peace in the next life that you deserved while you were here. I will always love you my sister. love you

She passed away this morning. The reports are real. We didn't deserve her.

When you report this you remember she was human: mother, daughter, sister, aunt. Her heart was bigger than the world. It really really was. She cared when most people wouldn't have. She was good. She only pursued right, no matter what. No one gave her justice.
