FL Students Stage a 7-Mile Walkout in Support of Parkland Shooting Victims and Survivors

Feb 21 2018 - 8:45pm

Today our students sat in the courtyard this morning with our Principal, Mr. Sommer, and took 17 minutes of silence to honor the 17 victims of the Douglas shooting. Then students proceeded to walk out of the school, some even making it to Douglas. These actions go to show that we are in need of a change and that something as saddening as the shooting will never happen again and has brought everyone together. To the students and staff at #MSD, West Boca stands with you. #msdstrong [1]

Students across the nation continue to make their voices heard following the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School [3] in Parkland, FL, and on Feb. 20, hundreds of students from West Boca Raton High School [4] staged a protest that turned into a massive walkout.

The demonstration began with students sitting in silence for 17 minutes to honor the 17 victims of the school shooting. But as a picture from the protest [5] — one that was shared on the high school's official Instagram — stated, "These actions go to show that we are in need of a change and that something as saddening as the shooting will never happen again and has brought everyone together."

According to The Miami Herald, students then began the seven-mile walk to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to show their support. A spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said police vehicles followed students on the walkout for their protection.

In addition to this recent demonstration, dozens of members of Teens For Gun Reform held a peaceful protest [9] outside of the White House on Presidents' Day. A nationwide walkout [10], organized by the Women's March, is also scheduled to take place on March 14. The Enough! National School Walkout aims to pressure congressmen and leaders to take action on gun control.
