George Zimmerman — the man acquitted of charges surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin — is trying to sell the gun he used to kill the 17-year-old [1] in 2012, according to NPR.
The listing for the 9 mm pistol [2] was posted on the site GunBroker.com by user "GZ1776" but has since been taken down. No word yet from the website whether the gun was sold or not.
NPR reports that the description read:
"I am proud to announce that a portion of the proceeds will be used to: fight [Black Lives Matter] violence against Law Enforcement officers, ensure the demise of Angela [Corey's] persecution career and Hillary Clinton's anti-firearm rhetoric. Now is your opportunity to own a piece of American History. Good Luck. Your friend, George M. Zimmerman ~Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum~"
Corey was the woman hired to prosecute Zimmerman during his trial and Si vis pacem para bellum means "If you want peace, prepare for war" in Latin.
The Martin family said the auction was diprespectful and insulting.
"It is insulting to this family that he would decide that he would sell the gun that he killed their child with," Daryl D. Parks, an attorney for the family, told The Washington Post [3]. "Think about what that means: this is a gun that took a child's life and now he wants to make money off of it."
Usurprisingy, "George Zimmerman" began trending on Twitter Thursday morning with many people criticizing the move:
George Zimmermann: "This is a piece of American History" - Me: "This is a piece of American disease."

George Zimmermann is a sad excuse for a human being. Sick to my stomach upon watching the news this morning.

I don't know what's worse, George Zimmermann auctioning his murder weapon or that he got free in the first place.
