The Women's March organizers have planned a general strike on International Women's Day [2], March 8, which is also being called "A Day Without a Woman." The strike calls for women to take the day off [3] paid and unpaid labor; the idea is to demonstrate what a day without women would look like.
Many women, however, cannot take the day off work, especially if they are already struggling to make ends meet — so organizers have outlined ways for all women to participate. Here are your action items for "A Day Without a Woman."
- Women (if able) should take the day off of paid and unpaid labor.
- Try to avoid shopping during the strike. If you have to shop, do so at small, women-owned, or minority-owned businesses.
- Wear red in solidarity with those striking.
The Women's March organizers also indicated that they were inspired by the Yemeni bodega strike in New York City [4] earlier in January and the #GrabYourWallet campaign [5]. Another organization of activists has also planned a strike on March 8 called the International Women's Strike [6], and the Women's March organizers stand in solidarity with their cause as well.
