J.K. Rowling Sent the Perfect Tweets During the Second Presidential Debate

Oct 10 2016 - 5:04pm

Harry Potter author and human rights activist J.K. Rowling has never been quiet about her political views, but between the Brexit [1] and a tempestuous US presidential election [2] in 2016, she's had more reason than ever to voice her outrage on social media this year. The second presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton provided another occasion for Rowling to weigh in on American politics, and she held absolutely nothing back. (And, following a leaked tape of Donald Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women [3] because he's "a star," why would she?)

While Rowling spent most of the Oct. 9 debate retweeting others' thoughts about the political spectacle, including this especially viral tweet from a Muslim man [4], she began the night by cautioning American voters about what democracy truly means.

The key question, right there, for voters in every democracy. Not 'who is he?' but 'who are we?' #PresidentialDebate [5]

Trump says 'just words, folks.' It's his accusation and his defence. Words don't matter. Facts don't matter. If they don't, we're all lost.

After a grave reminder that the president America elects reflects back on who the American people truly are, she cheekily referenced Trump's admission about his tax history with a quote from the crude video that landed him in hot water earlier in the week.

'It's your fault I didn't pay taxes, Hillary. Women let you do anything when you're a star.'

The following morning, Rowling tweeted an excerpt and link to an article about Donald Trump [9] by The Guardian, which declares: "The Republican candidate is dragging US democracy into dark places. His attitude to Hillary Clinton is part of wider refusal to treat women as equals."

And then, channeling her signature sass, she put a Twitter user on blast who was defending Trump's remarks about women while simultaneously insulting another man's masculinity.

What makes a 'genuine man?' Discuss (but please do not show your workings.) pic.twitter.com/15YUaiC9KU [13]

Don't even get her started on why she's concerned about American politics — Rowling will clap back with a dose of realism.

When a man this ignorant & easy to manipulate gets within sniffing distance of the nuclear codes, it's everyone's business. #RestOfTheWorld [15] https://t.co/yHBIIuhYEN [16]

Somebody give her a Twitter medal.
