Original story: Here's more proof that 2017 is already going up in flames [3]. Variations of the phrase "Snoop Doog, Donald Trump, a clown, and Marco Rubio" have been trending (see: here [4] and here [5]), and in case you're wondering why, let's break it down.
- On March 12, Snoop Dogg released a video for "Lavender (Nightfall Remix)" that shows him pointing a toy gun and pulling the trigger at a clown dressed like President Trump. (The song is meant to be a political commentary on social tensions in the country [6], including police brutality and the Trump administration. The video features Ronald Klump, who calls for all "doggs" to be deported.)
- Marco Rubio criticized the video [7] in an interview with TMZ on March 13, saying, "Snoop shouldn't have done that. You know, we've had presidents assassinated before in this country, so anything like that is something people should really careful about."
- On March 14, Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen also called out the video on TMZ [8] and demanded an apology from Snoop Dogg. "It's totally disgraceful. Snoop owes the president an apology," he said. "There's absolutely nothing funny about an assassination attempt on a president, and I'm really shocked at him because I thought he was better than that."
