On Sunday night during the 89th Academy Awards, The New York Times aired a new commercial entitled "The Truth Is Hard" for the first time ever. This comes after Trump repeatedly referred to several news outlets as "fake news" [1] and has even called the media "an enemy to the American people [2]."
In the 30-second advertisement, several proclamations about "the truth" appear in bold black text across a white background. "The truth is alternative facts are lies," can be heard in one voice-over. "The truth is locker room talk is harmless," another voice-over says, referring to Trump's outrageous excuse for his vile comments about grabbing women by their genitals [4]. The commercial also takes on Trump's alleged ties to Russia [5] and his controversial travel ban [6], closing with a simple statement: "The truth is hard. The truth is hard to find. The truth is hard to know. The truth is more important now than ever."
