- As the electoral college votes for the next president of the United States today, protesters have gathered at capitols across the country [1] in the hopes of blocking Donald Trump [2]'s election, though it's unlikely 37 electors would fail to vote for Trump to keep him from being named president by the college. - In international headlines, the Russian ambassador to Turkey was killed by a gunman on Monday, according to Russia's foreign ministry. Andrei Karlov was shot point-blank while giving a speech [3] at an art exhibit in Ankara, and the chilling moment was caught on video. Turkish police have reportedly killed the gunman, a fellow officer who was apparently protesting Russia's involvement in Aleppo, Syria, according to the BBC. Karlov was 62 years old [4] and began his diplomatic career in his early 20s.
- Speaking of Aleppo, the UN security council voted today to send officials to monitor the evacuations from the Syrian city [5]. Evacuations resumed Sunday night after they were stalled over the weekend when buses meant to transport civilians were reportedly set on fire by rebels. About 20,000 people have been removed from Aleppo, and the UN monitors are supposed to ensure "the well-being of civilians" who still need to be evacuated.
- Here at home, the internet is buzzing over the newly released trailer for Blade Runner 2049 [6]. The sequel takes place decades after the events of the 1982 classic and follows LAPD Officer K, played by Ryan Gosling [7]. Jared Leto [8] and Robin Wright also star in the film, as well as Harrison Ford [9], who's reprising his Rick Deckard character.
