Watch a Mother and Her Daughter Trapped in Aleppo Send an Emotional Message to Michelle Obama

Dec 19 2016 - 3:20pm

Update: According to a report in The Guardian, Bana and her family have been evacuated from Aleppo [1], Syria. Several photos of the girl posing with humanitarian workers near the Turkish border have been shared on social media, calming fears about her safety in the wake of the latest attacks in the besieged city.

Original Story: A Syrian mother and daughter trapped in Aleppo are asking Michelle Obama for help after the city's mass evacuation has hit another roadblock. On Dec. 15, thousands of civilians and rebels were able to flee Aleppo [2], but thousands still remain after the evacuations were halted [3] over conflicting reasons. Syrian officials claim rebel forces have broken the ceasefire agreement, while rebels insist it's the government's doing.

As details emerge, civilians continue to plead for a peaceful resolution. One of those civilians is 7-year-old Bana al-Abed [4] and her mother, Fatemah. Following the failed evacuation on Dec. 15, the two addressed the first lady in a video message [5] sent to NBC News.

In the video, Fatemah appealed to the first lady when she said, "I would like to tell you that we are still here in east Aleppo. I talk to you as a mother. I know that you have two beautiful daughters and I have three children, one of them Bana." She added, "I implore you to help us and make us in a safer place because we are so afraid." Fatemah then turned to Bana, who said, "Hello, Mrs. Obama. Please help us."

The mother and daughter's shared Twitter account has been one of the main voices coming from Aleppo but also the source of some controversy. Since the account was created in September 2016, Bana has become the face of the Aleppo crisis [13] — often referred to as the Anne Frank of the Syrian civil war [14] — but many have also questioned the account's validity. Was Bana being used by the rebels as antigovernment propaganda?

That doesn't appear to be the case: The New York Times recently spoke to Fatemah, and their exchange [15] did clear up some doubts. Fatemah and Bana are still reportedly trapped in Aleppo, as are thousands of others.
