Ted Cruz Picks Carly Fiorina as His VP Running Mate

Apr 27 2016 - 1:24pm

Ted Cruz announced on Wednesday that Carly Fiorina will be his vice presidential running mate. "I have come to the conclusion that if I am nominated to be president of the United States, I will run on a ticket with my vice presidential nominee, Carly Fiorina," said Cruz, speaking from Indiana.

"She knows how to expand and raise wages. She knows firsthand that the key to economic government is not more and more government but less and less government," he added, describing her character as honest and careful. He also said that because she has struggled in life — suffering from breast cancer and losing her stepdaughter to a drug overdose — that she will understand the struggle of the American people.

"Today I am very proud and humbled and honored," said the former Hewlett-Packard CEO as she accepted Cruz's offer. "This is a fight for the soul of our party and future of our nation. . . . This is a fight for all of us." Fiorina added that she's a pro at challenging the status quo and the establishment — it's how she made it from secretary to CEO.

Fiorina was a GOP candidate for president until she dropped out of the race in February; she endorsed Cruz in March [5]. "We knew Ted Cruz is a leader and a reformer," she said at the time, according to Politico. "He is willing to take on the status quo in Washington DC."

Yesterday, Cruz lost five GOP contests to Trump [6] — Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. He took home just three delegates, bringing his total count to 546 delegates and making it extremely difficult for him to claim the 1,237 needed to win the nomination. Trump is much closer with 953 delegates, but Cruz has vowed to keep fighting until the Republican convention in July.

Cruz alluded to Trump in his speech, saying that a good president is not one who is narcissict, abusive, or angry or someone who has always lived a life of privilege.

This announcement comes much earlier than normal in a presidential election. Cruz said the reason was because the American people "deserve to know what they're going to get," but it could be a final effort to revive the excitement around his campaign. At least that's what Trump's son Eric thinks:

This is truly one of the greatest acts of desperation I have ever seen. #Cruz [7] #GraspingatStraws [8]
