- Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump [1] sparred in what some are calling one of the most contentious presidential debates in history. Trump addressed the leaked video from 2005 in which he made lewd comments about women [2] by saying they were "just words" and accused Bill Clinton of far worse. At another point, Trump also pledged to have Hillary Clinton imprisoned [3] for her use of a private email server if he becomes president. Many Republicans continue to pull their support for Trump over his numerous controversies.
- Following his role in the leaked audio of Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women [4], Billy Bush has been suspended from NBC's Today show [5]. The network did not say how long Bush was suspended for, but people are calling for him to be fired for how he encouraged Trump's commentary.
- Drake set an American Music Awards record with 13 nominations. The rapper surpassed Michael Jackson's record for the honor [6]. Justin Bieber received five nominations and will become one of the award show's most decorated artists ever if he wins at least one category.
- The Ethiopian government declared a six-month state of emergency [7] this morning after civil unrest has grown more intense across the country. Two of the Ethiopia's biggest ethnic groups, the Oromia and Amhara, have protested the government for several months.
- Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg shared her opinion on Colin Kaepernick's [8] protest of the national anthem in an interview with Yahoo News's Katie Couric. Ginsburg called Kaepernick's kneeling gesture "dumb and disrespectful." "I would have the same answer if you asked me about flag burning," she said.
- The Trump Taj Mahal, which Donald Trump opened in 1980 but lost control over because of bankruptcy filings, will close today [9]. Carl Icahn, the billionaire who now owns the casino, said the Atlantic City, NJ, staple has been losing too much money.
