Here's a Pretty Good Idea of What the Obamas Will Do After They Leave the White House

President Obama's final term officially ends on Jan. 20, 2017, but people are already asking, "What will the Obamas do after he leaves the White House?" Geographically speaking, they've indicated they'll stay in Washington DC [1] for two years while 15-year-old Sasha completes high school. It's rare for former presidents to live in the capital after leaving office, according to The Hill [2], but it's important to the Obamas that Sasha doesn't transfer in the middle of high school.

However, that doesn't answer what Barack and Michelle will do with their time. Speaking to a group of middle school students in April 2015, the president gave hints about his plans [3]. "I'll go back to doing the kinds of work that I was doing before — just trying to find ways to help people, help young people get educations, help people get jobs, help bring businesses into neighborhoods that don't have enough businesses," he said.

This remark also aligns with the goals of the foundation, My Brother's Keeper [4], which the President launched in 2014. The organization aims to keep young men of color out of prison by empowering them to stay in school and providing them with necessary resources to succeed. Obama has also indicated he will focus his attention on this initiative after he moves out of the White House. While speaking at the My Brother's Keeper's official launch [5] in May 2014, Obama said, "This will remain a mission for me and for Michelle not just for the rest of my presidency, but for the rest of my life."

As for Michelle, she also has plans to keep going with her work encouraging young girls to continue their education, specifically through her Let Girls Learn [6] initiative. During her address to the United State of Women summit dinner [7] in June, Michelle said, "I am so excited to continue working on this issue not just for the next seven months as First Lady, but for the rest of my life."

If the President had his way, though, he'd probably take advantage of his free time by playing as much golf as possible — at least, that's according to the hilarious video released this year by the White House for the annual correspondents' dinner [8].
