Hillary Clinton beat Bernie Sanders to win the South Carolina primary with about 80 percent of the vote, according to The New York Times [1]. The result is hardly a surprise since Clinton led by a wide margin [2] in the polls leading up to the primary, but it's still a big blow to the Sanders campaign.

In her victory speech, Clinton thanked her supporters and said she was looking forward to building on President Barack Obama's record. She also took a jab at Donald Trump, saying, "Instead of building walls, we need to be tearing down barriers." In lieu of giving a concession speech, Sanders released a statement [3] congratulating Clinton but also writing, "This campaign is just beginning."

Both teams worked hard in the state, especially when trying to capture the influential black vote [6]. According to exit polls, Clinton lost the white vote (she received 42 percent of the white vote, while Sanders won 58 percent) but overwhelmingly won the black vote (84 percent vs. 16 percent). She also won the vote among those under (and over) age 45, which is surprising since Sanders has been known to appeal to youthful voters [7].

This is the fourth time this year that states have voted on a Democratic candidate — Clinton also narrowly won the Iowa [8] and Nevada [9] caucuses, only losing to Sanders in the New Hampshire primary [10] when he took home 60 percent of the vote. (Not sure what the difference is between a primary and a caucus? We've got you covered [11].)

South Carolina also hosted its GOP primary last weekend — Donald Trump won [12] that race, helping to give him the title of Republican front runner. The next big voting event to watch happens March 1, also known as Super Tuesday, when voters in a dozen states will decide on their party's presidential nominee.
