How to Avoid a Scary Dog Food Recall

Cook for a Pet?

Yum's Cooking and Baking poll got me thinking today . . . and inspired me to recreate one of my own. While I love baking up yummy treats for myself (and my pup), I couldn't cook a pet his own meal everyday – I can barely find the time to make food for myself! Just between you and me (so North doesn't get jealous!), how often do you feed pets a home-cooked meal or freshly baked treats?

One of my english cocker spaniels has severe food allergies and can't eat any storebought dog food, so I have to cook for her. All she can eat is pasta, ground beef and carrots. I make enough for 2 or 3 days and then I also have to feed her some vitamins. It's lot of work, but it keeps her healthy, so it's worthy it. My other cocker eats just about anything you give her, so I feed her storebought dog food and sometimes she gets some of Meg's porridge as a special treat. :)

I really want to start cooking for my baby Brandi. She's turning 9 in April, and I'm moving into another apartment that will actually allow Dobermans. And of courses I think my wigglebutt deserves the best!

My Persian guy is in the early stages of PKD, but is doing great on a commercial diet of dry and moist foods. But down the line, he may require a homemade diet. If a homemade diet is what he eventually needs, he'll get it! He is, after all, my dude! :)

My grandmother's dog, a Chihuahua, would only eat chicken. So, she would boil it, debone it, & cut it into small pieces for him. That dog was so pampered. I always baked treats for our girl, but she could have cared less if it came from the kitchen or a dog bakery.

I've always thought it silly until I got a pup and now I understand it. Fortunately, Brando's not picky at all and has an iron stomach (he eats everything) so I just give him the organic kibble to make sure he's healthy. I'd like to try baking some treats for him sometime...I do make a trip to Three Dog Bakery every now and then to get him some fresh baked treats, but I just can't find the time to do it myself. At least, not yet.

I don't have a pet, but cooking for a pet seems a little silly. Maybe I'd do it for special occasions. My stepgrandmother, however, used to fry an egg for her dog's breakfast every day.

My dog will eat anything, unfortunately he has a sensitive stomach so it's only kibble and scooby snacks for him (poor guy!). My fiance always wants to give him scraps, but it never fails to upset his poor stomach. I do want to experiement with home made doggie treats though. I've read that pumpkin is really good for their digestive systems, so maybe that would help him out a bit!

I technically make my dogs food daily because I put in a scoop of dry Wellness food, add a little water, and heat it up in the microwave.. he thinks he's getting a fancy dinner. :) I do give him chicken and fish occasionally as well.

I cooked up some salmon for my kitties the other day (just the skinny end of what I was already making for the humans of the house). One cat absolutely loved the fish, couldn't get enough, was purring while she scarfed it down. The other - completely indifferent, wouldn't even lick it. Weird!

I only have one kitty, and I think it's pointless to make all these extravagent foods for one soooooo only store-brought. BUT it is the best I can buy! (and most expensive :P)

I used to feed my cats raw food so I was always making it for them. It became increasingly harder to find organic meats where I lived so I made the switch to canned. If I had a reliable source for organic poultry, I would give them raw again. I probably should do some research on cooked food because my cats are so picky it's hard to find canned they like, and since I have to special-order most of it anyway, it's a big pain in the tail.

I'm in the beginning phases of starting a dog trear business. All I do is bake:) However, after doing extensive research I think I'm going to start feeding my dog raw. I know it's controversial but I think its going to be best for my pup. If I have time to research and put the best foods into my body, I should do the same for any of my pets:)

I cook up a big batch of porridge for the dogs, extra lean grnd chkn, brown rice, whole grain oatmeal, green beans, carrots, chopped apples(cored) a little rosemary. The dogs love it, I make enough for 3-4 days, then do it all over again!
