Little Bear is a tiny puppy on an important mission. His task? Spreading the word about the harmful consequences of backyard breeding.
At just 4 weeks old, Little Bear found himself abandoned shortly after a man purchased him from a backyard breeder on Craigslist for just $600. The pup was intended as a companion for the man's newborn baby before he quickly discovered the difficulty of caring for an animal separated from its mother at such a young age. According to Social Tees animal rescue director Samantha Brody, Little Bear's initial owner said he needed to get rid of Little Bear immediately or he would dump him on the street.
Thankfully Social Tees was able to immediately scoop him up and begin the proper healthcare routine necessary for Little Bear's survival. His care has been a nonstop labor of love for shelter staffers, bottle feeding the pup at every hour and paying for his medical expenses. He is working on his socializing chops in a caring foster home while he waits to fully develop before being adopted by the right family.
What can you do to help?
Social Tees is determined to tackle the issue of Craigslist animal sales with the help of fellow animal-lovers. Little Bear was incredibly lucky and his journey will have a happy ending, but many dogs purchased online (including his parents and siblings) are not so fortunate. Social Tees is working with the NYPD to locate the rest of Little Bear's family, but it's crucial that these sales become more difficult to avoid more heartbreaking stories like this one. Simply sifting through Craigslist's pets section and "flagging" posts that look suspicious to have them taken down can make an important dent in preventing online animal sales. Additionally, if you'd like to assist Social Tees with Little Bear's medical expenses and supplies, you can donate here.
