Do Tell: Picking Up After Other Dogs?

While I walked across town to meet friends for brunch over the weekend, I witnessed a woman's dog do his business in front of me while she stopped and pretended not to notice . . . and then they just kept on walking! I was rather surprised because there were other people on the sidewalk yet no one said anything. If I had a bag in my purse, I would have stopped and handed her one . . . but I wasn't in the mood to get into an altercation on the street corner. And she looked like she couldn't be bothered with being responsible as she was clearly averting her eyes from the situation. I think not picking up after a dog makes all pet owners in the area look bad so, do tell, have you ever picked up after another pooch? How would you handle this situation?

If my dog does a poo at the park and I can't find, I will generally pick up another dog's poo to try and keep the number of poos at the park stable, but otherwise I wouldn't. And at the park I take Bella to, if we see another dog doing its business, we will generally yell out to the owner.

I'm always embarrassed as a dog owner to see people not pick up - it's especially bad in my apartment as well and I hate how other residents will try to tell me off when they see my dog poop...until they see me whip out a bag and pick it up! I pick up every single time...yet there's poop everywhere and I see the other dog owners returning from the back of the building all the time without bags! Ugh, I can't wait to move into a house! (where I can then compost the poop most of the time....YAY!)

I always pick up the poo! And for some reason he poos in public mostly with me and not when he's with my Stedman. I see dogs poo in the dog park and no one picks up after it sometimes. I don't agree that it's hard to keep track at the dog park. Your dog should always be where you can see it. Yesterday we went for a run and I forgot a bag. He doesn't usually poop when we run, but of course he did that day! I used a piece of bark and a big leaf from the ground to scoop the poo into the trash. I have seen people try to leave poo on the ground, and I think it's fine to offer a bag. Or even if not, just play dumb and be nice, "Oops, I don't think you noticed but your dog just pooped!"

I have picked up other animals messes quite often. I live in a small downtown area and know most of the people who work and own businesses in my neighborhood. It's a pretty area with lots of outdoor cafes, so a lot of people bring their dogs downtown to walk them. If they leave poop behind I'm always afraid that people will think that it's mine since I'm out with my dogs five or six times a day, so i always pick up any random piles (and carry lots of hand sanitizer!).

If you're worried about plastic bags in landfills, all pet stores sell bags that are biodegradable. Caring about the environment is not an excuse to avoid picking up after your dog.

Not picking up dog poo contributes to water quality issues the same is said for cow poo and wild animals just because they do it does not make it safe. I pick up an poo I see because it is my biggest pet peeve in the world and I carry far more bags than are necessary. My apartment complex has started to fine people for not cleaning up after their animals. I can not stand when people let their kids walk the dog and do not teach them to clean up after them. There are a couple of kids that avoid the grassy area behind my apartment because the last time they let their dog poo and try to leave it behind I handed them a bag and said you forgot something. When I am walking Cuba and see someone that needs a bag I just assume they forgot. I don't pay attention to their facial expressions.

rickimc - i agree ive always thought it would be better for the environment if we just let the poop decompose and then not use the bags....if they were wild animals theyd be pooping in the grass anyways

I actually have picked up other dogs' poo when I've seen it in the area where I take my pooch to do his business. It doesn't happen that often, and I do it b/c I'm worried my neighbors will think it's my precious pooch's dooty and get mad at me. :(

If I saw that happen right in front of me and had a bag, I would say "oh! I have a bag if you need one!" and hand it to her. if no bag, I probably would not have the nerve to say anything.. just sigh loudly. The best was when I hadn't noticed that I stepped in dog poo and tracked it into my car.. and it was winter so the heat in my car was on. I cleaned that mat multiple times and never quite got rid of the smell. Ick.

I'm fairly good about picking up after my, even if it's not right away (next day). One thing that irks me though, is at the local dog park, there is a woman we call the poop nazi. She will pick up poop she saw your dog leave, and shove the bag to your chest!!! That's a little extreme. In a large park, sometimes it is difficult (if not near impossible) to always catch your dog in the act and then actually find the poop by the time you walk over there. Most of the people I go with pick up after their dogs, or if they can't find the offending pile, will pick up an old one!

Isn't it healthier for the environment to leave it that to fill landfills with plastic bags full of dog poop? I pick up after mine, but this always makes me wonder.

Flames, I have to say that I was in the same position a few years back while renting an apartment from hell. Had to tell all of my guests to stick to the center of the sidewalk, and to take their shoes off when entering my home. Bags were provided for doggie doo, but nobody used them. The management didn't give a shit. No pun intended.

We always clean up after our dog. I used to live in a neighborhood where the owners did not pick-up. You had to be careful where you stepped and at night it was dangerous! So many times i had to clean my shoes. It was even on the side walks. Gross! I was mad! I did not yell at the owners.

I used to have 3 dogs and there was this one time I actually ran out of plastic bags. I couldn't do anything but walk them home, grab a new bag and come back to pick it up. However, this one time that I didn't have a bag, a couple decided to stop their car, yell obscenities at me and the speed off. I was standing there like WTF?! I yelled back that I didn't have anymore bags on me and was going to ask them for one but they'd taken off by then. If you're going to tell someone off, at least have a bag on you so they can pick it up!

My folk's neighbors had a Golden that would poo in their yard a few times per week. Dad would just take a shovel and sling it back in their yard! They were good neighbors, though, and would often patrol my parents yard for offending loafs. It was more of a good natured joke than anything.

I need this sign for my neighbors. It really aggravates me, I always clean up after Brody and other people just act like its no big deal. Sometimes I feel like pooper scooping it and dumping it back on their lawns

I laughed out loud when I saw the "or cats" here. Who walks their cats? (Aside from me.)

Ugh, I hate it when owners don't pick up after their dog. Our apartment complex provides several "clean up" stations but still I find myself constantly tip-toeing around so I don't step in poop. I feel embarrassed because I don't want others to think my dog left anything! I think it's a good idea to offer someone a bag if you're witnessing the action.

Once while walking down the street I gave someone a bag and they reluctantly cleaned up after giving me a strong glare. Usually my dog goes in a fenced in area in my apartment complex. They have a scooper and rake, and I've raked up other dogs' business on occasion. Why don't some people think they should clean up after their own dog?????

Thankfully, I live in a neighborhood where people clean up after their pooches. But my parents do not have that luxury. They have a neighbor that has trained its dog to poop in the street. NOT on the grass but right in the middle of the street. Its not a very traveled area so the likelyhood of a car coming by is pretty small. But they literally let the dog out, it runs to the street, poops and then runs back inside. AND THEY LEAVE IT THERE!!! My mother is furious about it, and has moved the poop from the street to their lawn/sidewalk/driveway. Its getting ugly!!
