Recently, my pooch and I had a close encounter of the hovering kind. While out walking on a lovely Indian Summer day, Lily stopped to sniff the low branches of a lemon tree and came nose to nose with a curious (and intrepid) hummingbird! It stayed well out of snout's reach but flitted close enough that we could clearly see its rosy head and hear the characteristic hum of its wings that gives the tiny avian its name.
