Until going to dog shows and meeting champion purebred dogs, I had no idea they came with such elaborate names. But when I opened my Westminster program this week and saw that every dog had a name that was twice as long as mine, I was so intrigued. It turns out, all these dogs have a registered name (the long one) and a call name (a short one). For example, this year's best in show winner's registered name is Vjk-Myst Garbonita's California Journey, but in the ring he just goes by CJ.
The registered name can sometimes start with the place the dog was bred and then the interesting part can be a tribute to a person or place or some kind of family name. Or it could just be something amazing, like these seven favorites of mine from this year's Westminster show.
- Parti-Color Cocker Spaniel named Shine Bright Like a Diamond
- Dogue de Bordeaux named I Am Humphrey Bogart de la Tour Gelee
- Australian Terrier named Say It With Bacon
- Bedlington Terrier named Heads I Win Tails You Lose
- Canaan Dog named Dangerous Gale Force Winds
- Pug named Let's Get Ready to Rumble
- Redbone Coonhound named Gentleman, Start Your Engines
