Jon and Kate Plus 8 Do Tell: Would You Hire a Pet Sitter For a Couple Hours?

On last night's episode of Jon and Kate Plus 8, Shooka and Nala had just a bit role . . . but one that gave me food for thought. With Jon and Cara in Utah and Kate and the rest of the gang off to see Sesame Street Live!, the Gosselins hired a dog sitter to hang out with the puppies for the day. Must be nice! I understand sitters for overnight trips, and walks during the day, but have you ever hired a pet sitter for just a few hours of absence?

I already have. My pet companion is blind and is 17 years old. The person that babysat almost does it for a living. My Tiffany had a stroke so she does not walk too straight but for the most part shw has good memory so she remembers where things are. Although she also eats dog food (no perservatives) she also has her favorite which makes her strong. From not eating at all to where she is now is quite a feat. While everyone gave up on her, I didn't. Now the vet is calling her the "miracle dog."

Oh, also, LOVE the little German Shepherd puppies. GSD's are my soft spot.

For a few hours, I use a crate. If it is a long day, I make other arrangements.

We take our dog to doggie day care a few times a week -- does that count? She's there for more than a few hours.

When they are puppies they need someone to take them out. The rule is they can only hold it for as old as they are- 2 months old, they can hold it 2 hours, And I remember how my puppies got into EVERYTHING and tried to eat cords and the rugs...I can't imagine how many baby toys or bottles or good smelling things Jon and Kate have just laying around. I think it was the responsible thing to do. My dog is old now and needs a dog walker if I'm gone for a long time and she loves it.

Absolutely. B-Bop has bad separation anxiety, he won't eat or drink while we're gone and shakes and drools the whole time. If someone is there watching him or I drop him off somewhere, he's distracted enough to not be so upset.

No but I have had friends/family pop in especially when they are babies.. But now only if I am going to be gone too long. I don't want them to be crossing their paws. ;)

I use a crate. That's it. I know she cries sometimes b/c my neighbors tell me (I live in an apt. building). They understand though. I do on occassion leave her at my aunt's place (which is next door) if she's going to be home while I am gone for evening - especially if I've already been gone all day.

Yeah, when I first got my dog, even though she wasn't a puppy when I adopted her, I had someone look in on her and spend time with her when I was going to be gone for a long time. Since she was in a new environment (and her previous one was so bad) I didn't want her to develop anxiety issues over being left alone. It seemed to really ease the adjustment and she's perfectly fine now. (Although, she really doesn't love being alone, but she knows I'm coming home, and doesn't seem to get as anxious about it.)

With puppies? Yes. They need it.

Sigh. Yes, currently I am working and in school. On days when I am gone longer then 8 hours, I have my dog walker spend a few hours to give them cuddles and playtime in addition to exercise...

I've never hired a sitter (not in the budget), but I've had a neighbor teenager I trust come in to play, walk, and feed them if I will be gone overnight. I usually crate my fosters if I will only be gone a few hours.

yes, both when the pups were puppies and as adults, too. i think jon and kate modeled responsible dog owner behavior because puppies can easily get into trouble ... not to mention trouble that could injure them. most people will jump at the chance to puppy sit ... and it's good for the critters, too, to have the company.

When they were puppies, yes we did we made sure they had someone ever 2 hours to check in on them, play with them, and let them out. Really helped in the potty training aspect of things. Now that they are older though we don't do it anymore.
