Oprah pays tribute to her dog, Sophie

Oprah Pays Tribute to Her Beloved Sophie

Oprah opened today's show by saying it was for "anybody, anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog or just cares about their basic right to human treatment." She dedicated the show to her spaniel, Sophie, who passed away on March 10, saying:

Sophie gave me 13 years of pure unconditional love. She was the true love in my life. In fact, she's been one of the greatest reasons for me to be a kinder, more gentler person.

The tribute video, which Oprah's team put together for her, is incredibly moving. See for yourself, but before you start, you might want to grab a tissue.

I couldn't watch the Oprah puppy mill show. I know what puppy mills are like, but I'm glad she showed it. I hope with her money and influence she can keep it in the forefront and hopefully cause more people to be more active. Laws against puppy mills should be stronger. Anyone who would do harm to a helpless animal should be punished.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody. Honestly it felt as though I would never smile again, but the days are getting better. Even though I miss EVERYTHING about my pup (even him kicking me while we were asleep), bawling has turned into shedding some tears when I talk about him, and that will eventually turn into a smile when I think of my angel. All the kind words from you guys has helped. Thanks. -Rotten

I'm very sorry for your loss callmerotten. I'm glad that your dog doesn't have to suffer anymore, but it is heartwrenching. I had a hard time watching this, I have two beautiful puppies, they are my world, I can't even imagine losing them. My sympathy goes out to those who have lost their pets. I didn't get to catch the puppy mill episode, maybe I'll watch it on youtube.

Awww... that was such a sweet and moving tribute for dear Sophie. It brought tears to my eyes. I know if our dog passed away, I'd feel sad as well.

I am so sorry for your loss, callmerotten  The video is such a great tribute. I also don't get the Oprah bashing.....she lost her beloved dog for gosh sakes! Strange comment

i didn't watch the video. i can't do it. i volunteered at the Houston SPCA for years and every time they had a volunteer orientation, they made us watch a video about the work the shelter does, esp. the cruelty cases. i always had to walk out of the room. i have never watched a single episode of houston animal cops, although i was friends with all the cruelty investigators..

Callmerotten, I am so sorry for your loss as well. The wonderful thing about having a pet is that they do live in your heart forever. And it sounds like you gave Chachi a lot of love in his 13 years. :)

I also happened to catch yesterdays show...I cried my face off...I cried for Sophie, for all the helpless suffering puppies in those tiny cages, and thinking of the day I would have to say goodbye to my own lil guy...the show was extremely heartbreaking. Im SOOOOOOOO SO sorry Callmerotten.

I'm so incredibly sorry callmerotten. I watched the show last night, and could not stop crying. I knew about puppy mills, but could never have imagined what I saw. Our 3 dogs mean the world to me, and I just kept hugging and petting them during the show. Our dog Zoe is a rescue, and the vet thinks that she came from a puppy mill, due to all of the scaring that she has- they couldn't even tell if she had been spayed at first, due to all of the scaring. Oprah did a great thing by exposing this on her show, and I hope that it does some good. I never have and now never will buy my pet from a pet store. I really feel like these large pet stores, like Petco, need to be held accountable for buying their dogs at puppy mills. That's where the change should start.

I had to put my down to sleep last night. He was going to be 13 this August. He was seizuring for almost 3 hours and it was honestly the most heart wrenching thing I've ever had to watch. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one bawling over losing a pet. RIP CHACHI! IF LOVE COULD'VE SAVED YOUR LIFE, YOU WOULD'VE LIVED FOREVER! I'm gonna miss you mi bebe!

Just goes to show you no matter how much good someone does or tries to do someone will always have something to say. I haven't seen any mainstream media focusing on this topic so whenever someone can put it out there and educate me and others I'm grateful! I bet millions of people will think twice about how they get their pets just because of this one show.

I don´t get why certain people don´t like oprah , cause she tries to help but whatever.. Hope that the people who might not have been aware of this before, are now and do something. just like I hope oprah is doing something too.

Im not to crazy for Oprah, but I do have a cocker spaniel (she's on my profile pic!) and I would hate too lose her, just thinking about it makes me really sad. Pets are wonderful and we should take care of them, because they love us unconditionally.

Not a rabid fan of Oprah, but was home sick and happened to catch today's show. Although it was one of the toughest things I have ever watched (I had to leave the room several times during the airing), I think it is "must viewing" for anyone thinking of bringing a pet home. I checked on and parts of the show, if not the whole thing, can be viewed through her site. It is beyond horrifying. We really do need to find our pets at REPUTABLE breeders, or better yet, shelters and breed rescues. The four Persians that I rescued in the past many years were such amazing gifts. Sorry for the dissertation, but this show really hit a nerve in me.

wren- EXACTLY- I hope celebrities like PARIS STUPID HILTON and all the rest who we see popping in to pet stores to buy their tiny little cute babies are watching this Oprah and quitting the pet stores! It makes me insane, these celebs. Does Paris watch Oprah??

I watched about 20 minutes of the show, and had to stop. It was so heartbreaking and frustrating. I do think it's a good idea of a Sophie tribute show, for those who aren't familiar with the severe inhumanity of puppy mills. The issue warrants much more mainstream coverage. Just think of all of the celebrities alone that we see buying from pet shops, when they could afford any dog--shocking!

Heart-breaking. I know what it's like to love a companion animal that much, and I I cried when I found out Sophie died of kidney failure and I cried just now. I wish they hadn't have shown it, but I understand. People feel like they know celebrities that they watch everyday, and when someone we know is going through something painful we want to see them cry so that know they are getting better. I stayed far away from Oprah's show today. I don't want to be crying all weekend with haunting images in my head (I'm already having a hard time staying positive with South Korea considering making dogs livestock). It's true: everyone knows about puppy mills. But for anyone who didn't know, I hope whatever horrible images they saw today make them aware. I just hope Oprah is surrounded by people who truly love her and are helping her survive this tragedy.

That's a little harsh about Oprah. I'm sure she loved and cared for her dog. Don't hate her because she's rich. I believe she honestly cares for humanity. That said, this show was incredibly hard for me to watch. I'm glad she did this!

I don't understand why people have such a strong dislike for Oprah. She's a good person who speaks on some important things. Her show today was very good, and yeah, it's too bad that this is how people have to be informed on puppy mills & the overpopulating of animals, but at least people who weren't before, are now being informed. I am not a die-hard Oprah fan, but any means, but I do think she has all good intentions and who has worked hard to get where she is. She's a very influential woman, who is a very good role model. As for people voting for a certain person in the presidential election based on her feelings, I'd rather her speak on the subject rather than idiots like Heidi Montag.

Comment Add a Comment junebug20 1 Sorry to hear about her dog. I'm tired of reading about The Church of Oprah. While Puppy Mills is a topic that should be talked about, it's sad that it has to be aired on her show in order for people to take notice. She will put just about anything on her show these days and then people believe it. Just like that pyramid scheme book "The Secret." People are actually basing their vote on the President of the United States because of what Oprah says! I give up! She couldn't be bothered to walk her own puppy and the poor thing choked on a ball. She said she came running from her house without shoes on and so forth. I just don't get why celebrities have pets when they cannot even take care of them. I actually look forward to coming home after a long day and feeding my cat and then allowing him to much on grass outside. Afterwards, he usually rewards me by sitting on my lap. I couldn't imagine hiring someone else to do this for me. I once worked for this physical therapist who thought it was my job to walk her Shihtzu. She lived not 10 minutes from the clinic. She could just as easily went home on her lunch to walk her dog.
