Out and About: Georgia's Georgia Aquarium

Out and About: Georgia's Georgia Aquarium

With over eight million gallons of water housing more than 100,000 animals of 500 species, the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is one of the largest in the world. Residents include two massive Whale Sharks – check out that huge mouth up above! Capable of weighing up to 15 tons, these "gentle giants" are filter feeders meaning they live off of plankton and animals, scooped up in bucket-like fashion with their four-foot-wide mouths.

This aquarium celebrated its two year anniversary last month – and introduced four new Leopard Whiprays last week giving it the largest collection of this species in the US. Also seen up top, these rays collected offshore of Penghu (an island group on the west coast of Taiwan) have a distinctive, leopard-like pattern that extends down much of their tails as well. I could go on and on naming and describing the cool creatures found here, but I recommend checking them out for yourself!

When it's not so crowded, the G.A. is a great place to go! I have some great pictures from last year.

I adore aquariums, but we don't have one around here. There's one in Tampa that I want to go to though.

I live about an hour away, and my sister and I went last spring-- it was extremely crowded (it had just opened), but I'm sure it'd be a fun trip otherwise. Of course, that was before several of the whales died...

We live in Atlanta and love it! Be warned though that due to the deaths of some of their star attractions, some of those exhibits may be closed or not have them in it as they will be in quarantine. It's been the Whale Sharks (like the one PetSugar commented on above) and the Belugas, very sad.

This place is amazing! There are lots of hands on petting areas and there is tons to see. Plus (this is totally random) the chocolate cake in the cafe is sooooo yummy! I've been twice and want to go again.

I love Aquarium's! We don't have one in my city so if we go somewhere where there is one, I always try to check it out! They are so neat and you can spend a whole afternoon relaxing and looking at fish :P
