Pet Peeves: My Dog Always Gives Kisses!

Q: My dog is always giving kisses – on my arm or my leg or even my face – he doesn't care. I don't really mind if he does this to me, but it can be embarrassing when company comes and he starts licking them... and they're less than impressed. He has water in his dish so I know he can't be thirsty – what's wrong with him?

A: Chances are your dog is licking you to show affection and for the natural salt on your skin. Unfortunately, since you've made it ok for him to do that to you, you'll have to nip that in the bud first. My best tip is to start practicing when you are home alone with pup. When he starts to lick you, gently hold him out of tongue's reach. Be consistent. It will take some time for him to understand that it's not a game... and to break him of this behavior. He should realize that when he licks you, the playing stops. Then, try to redirect his attention with a fun toy to lick (like a peanut butter-filled Kong) instead.

I have a really sweet dog that I took in that was homeless. She was so timid I think she had been abused. It took her a while to warm up to me but after she did she has became such a needy little thing. She wants so much loving. She will lick you all over. Any bare skin shes sees she wants to lick you on. I hope that means that she loves me. Because this dog loves me with all of her heart. I really do love doggie sugars. No one should think it is gross just there way of loving us I guess.

Oh, my dog does this! I have a mini poodle and she is so lovey and sweet, but the licking!!! Usually I have to say "No!" and push her head away about twice and then she will just cuddle. She always tries to lick but it used to be incessant, but now I tell her no and she stops. Just be consistent and you should be able to manage your puppy love! NOTE: When I first started this telling her no thing I would have to do it like 8 times... just keep it up and it'll work!

My dog loves giving kisses ... I just warn people who come over. If it gets too bad (He's pretty good about listening, though.) I'll put him up somewhere.

My dog licks anything... the couch, the carpet, the bed... drives me nuts!! I've heard of using lemon juice and placing it where he likes to lick... and it still doesn't stop him.

One of mine will actually jump at peoples' noses to lick them. I have to warn people when they bend down to pet him. He wouldn't dare try it with us, but he's a monster to unsuspecting strangers.

My cat gives me kisses, too! It's so ridiculously cute that I let her...but it kind of hurts. When we had a golden retriever, kisses were didn't want a doggie drool bath! We taught her pretty quickly, no lickies! With smaller dogs and puppies it's sweet, though. I don't mind kisses too much!

Dogs lick in unpleasant places then turn around and lick you...just remember that. Dogs really need manners and constant licking is not cool

cubadog- My friend weiner dog did that too! he always liked to sleep under the covers, and snuggle up beside you. and if it was cold his body heat would keep you warm.

My dog loves licking but fortunately he's small and he has a small tongue so I think it's cute and funny. But I am aware that some people hate it, so I don't let him lick others unless they are ok with it.

My dog knows that she shouldn't lick people but sometimes she forgets, and then she get's told not to and she stops. I hate going someplace and having someone else's dog lick me, ewww.

My sister's dog licks everybody, everywhere. They even let her lick inside their ears & on their lips! It's so gross. It makes the dog very unpleasant to be around. My dog would only lick you when you asked her for a kiss & even then, she would only use the very tip of her tongue & she would only lick your arm. Every once in a while, she would lick my husband's face, but that was after several minutes of him purposely ignoring her. Thank goodness she was not obsessed with licking! We got lucky with her.

I have a pitbull mix that is obsessed with this. You can stop her but she'll forget like 10 seconds later and start doing it again. Expecially if I have lotion on she goes nuts - I'll literally have to fight her off sometimes. She is incredibly focused and there is no distracting her with treats or games. It was cute at first but now I worry that she's OCD or something.

I really don't like when other peoples dogs lick me, but I love when my dog does! She's just a tiny lil puppy and she gives kisses on the face when she hasn't seen you in awhile (when I get home from work or wake up in the morning). She will also sit and lovingly lick arms and legs, which doesn't bother me, but I am quite aware that many, many, many people are repulsed by this.

Terry my wiener is the same way. I love him for it. When we go to bed at night I always say lets go make out. Before anyone freaks out I do not make out with my dog but he runs and burrows under the covers when I say it. That is how he lets me know he is ready to get up to eat.

I don't like licky dogs so when ours start to get licky ill pull away and make like a uh-uh noise. They will do an occasional lick and run but they dont sit there and continually lick. I saw this guy sitting on a couch with his dog in our student sitting area once. And literally for 10 minutes straight the dog was licking him. It was really creepy

My friend's weiner dog would do this. He was an older dog that totally knew better. He had such a personality; I would make him sit up and he looked like a little old man. Anyway, when he would do this he would go on as long as you'd let him, but he'd quit if you made him. But then he'd always go back for one last little lick, and sheepishly turn his head! He was a great dog. I had pet envy.
