Pet Rescue Jacket: Spoiled Sweet or Spoiled Rotten?

Don't be fooled – this pup isn't planning a costume of caught-in-a-torrential-downpour for Halloween this year. He's actually sporting a new, top-of-the-line pet rescue jacket (along with attached emergency kit and food pockets) at this week's Security and Safety Trade Expo in Tokyo. As cute as he looks in this get-up, the first thing that came to mind was the amount of time and patience it would take (in an emergency no less) to get this onto my squirmy guy. And, ranging between $238 and $425, that price tag is not so easy to swallow either. Would your pet stand for this? Would you?

When the day comes that I buy a dog, although it is not set in stone, I think the most expensive thing I would buy him/her is a name brand collar. Even then I have to really think about it...As for the rescue jacket I don't think I would buy that. Most dogs I know hate wearing anything and if we are still set on making them wear something they won't move. They will stand there until we take it off. Same thing with the little booties for the winter. My boyfriend's dog tries to kick them off and will continue doing that until either they come off or we take them off.

My dog would kill me! She's a 35 lb springer and she hate me when I make her wear a lifejacket on the boat - and that was only $30

I change my tune now that I know that the dog has been trained to wear that for a specific reason. I thought the owner was to lazy to cary her wallet or something!

That hood just looks uncomfortable and probably doesn't do it's hearing any good being shoved in there like that. Not a good idea for a dog who's going to be looking for people and needs to hear. Second, Dachshunds really shouldn't have items strapped to them because it can put strain on their backs. Also, I'd LOVE to see Dachshunds be used for rescue dogs (I own 2 and am kind of fond of them) but usually it's the larger hunting breeds that are used for search & rescue, so it seems odd to show it off on a small dog...

It's great for a fully trained search and rescue dog, but for the normal pet... come on people.

i'm disappointed with this being presented as an accessory instead of the rescue tool for trained dogs that it is. Here's a link to a different blog post about it:

I never understand why people dress up their pets in costumes.

Im pretty sure Miya wouldnt know to save the food for an emergency. I dont understand what the point of something like this is. If a dog gets into an "emergency" situation without you around, then it wouldnt know what to do with that stuff anyway. If it got into an emergency situation and you are around, then why would it need to wear it's emergency kit, when you could just put it somewhere (ie; your trunk or a cabinet) This baffles me.

StefaPie is right, this is a "Canine Earthquake Rescue Jacket" for trained dogs to wear as they make their way to people trapped in earthquakes to bring them food and water. So for that I think the price is def worth it! And I think it would be great if we could get the whole story so we don't think people are out there creating this for the regular consumer. :)

I love it! I'm a spaceohholic, AND I love dogs, this is just too cool for words! I wouldn't buy it though, and I don't even have a dog. I don't get the pink and fuzzy outfits for animals OR tiny, tiny dogs, but a space suit on a dachsen? Count me in!!!

I would spend that money on a pet, but I'm confused about what this thing DOES...

Okay, this is actually an emergency kit to put on trained recuse dogs so they can craw through the small spaces in rubble and bring food and water to people trapped in collapsed buildings and cave-ins. It's not meant as a civilian accessory.

CRAZY! Poor little pooch ... I would not put my pups through that humiliation. Sporting doggy capes on Halloween is stressful enough for them. :-)
