Hail to the Pooch: Bo's Best Moments of 2011

Dec 22 2011 - 4:00am

Whether rolling Easter eggs or soccer balls on the White House lawn, our favorite presidential pet has had a whirlwind year. But the unabashed Portuguese Water Dog seemed just as comfortable meeting celebrity athletes as he did snuggling up with sick children during story time. So before this year goes to the dogs, let's take a look back at some of Bo's most memorable moments of 2011.

April brought the annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House's South Lawn. Bo's enthusiasm was kept well in check so that the kids could get their fill of hunting, but he joined the first family during story time and even pointed out his favorite parts.

In October, first lady Michelle Obama encouraged kids to get active [3] by hosting local children and the US Women's National Soccer Team for a few rounds of soccer on the White House's South Lawn. Bo partook of the fun, proving that dogs need plenty of exercise, too!

For an already busy household, the holidays mean full steam ahead on decorating and entertaining in the most famous US residence. Bo took charge in receiving and approving the White House Christmas Tree [5].

Deck the halls with boughs and . . . Bo? The family pooch took center stage [7] at a reception for military families at which the first lady revealed this year's amazing holiday decorations. The Bo replicas came in all sizes and materials: from tiny dogs made of buttons to life-sized models crafted from felt and garbage bags.

The world's most powerful dog is certainly not too important to run his own errands. Squeezing in some last-minute Christmas shopping, Bo and President Obama browsed the rawhide aisle at Petsmart on Wednesday.

This presidential pooch knows a thing or two about humanitarianism. At this year's visit to the Children's National Medical Center, Bo listened patiently to story time, and then made some new friends among the patients and families in attendance.
