Meet Ramekins and His Ladies

Check out this post shared by Sugar staffer Elka in our Pet of the Day group in the Pet Community!

Last Fall my brother was gifted a ram, who was promptly names Ramekins (ha ha). For a few months Ramekins was given free range of Ian and my sister-in-law Emily's 40-acre farm. Ramekins made friends with Ian's Gordon Setter, Freya, and the two were often seen trotting around the property together. Neither would ever venture onto the rural country road, but they would explore the nooks and crannies of the property, from creeks to fields to outbuildings.

Unfortunately, the longer that Ramekins remained a eweless bachelor, the more surly he became. He started chasing Freya and butting her. He butted my dad when he came over to feed Ramekins one evening. He also had an unfortunate habit of leaving not-so-welcome presents on the front porch. So Ian built him a paddock and shelter, effectively ending Ramekins' free range lifestyle. Once fenced in he was perpetually grumpy, and even more inclined to butt people.

Keep reading for more of Ramekins's saga (and more cute pics)!

Luckily though, Ian had a plan. He writes, "Christmas came around and I bought two Jacob crosses and 2 Dorset/Friesen Cross ewes. I delivered the Jacobs first. Ramekins was beside himself. He was downright comical with his lingual and iliac antics . . . The ewes, however wanted nothing of it. They were already knocked up. Same with the Dorset Crosses that showed up the next day. Ramekins, nonetheless is a much happier fellow, with his feminine entourage. Big Love, indeed."

My brother and his wife are just getting their sheep herd started, but eventually will use these heritage sheep for wool and cheese production. I can't wait to visit them in the Spring and see all of the little lambs frolicking about!

Snapped any cute pics of your pup, kitten, or . . . ram lately? Be sure to share them in our Pet of the Day group! Your cutie may just end up on PetSugar.
