Nothing is more exemplary of the importance of a balanced ecosystem than the mighty sea otter. In fact, according to recent studies, the role sea otters play in the food chain could be the key to fighting global warming. A sea otter's diet consists heavily of sea urchins, prickly little sea animals that prey on sea kelp, which trap and store large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In the presence of sea otters, urchins go into hiding and are forced to eat plant scraps, leaving the sea kelp forest alone and the air cleaner.
