We had a trainer to the house for both of our dogs. It only took two meetings for each dog and ALOT of practice from us. Happs- To stop the jumping you need to practice having someone come to the house. We got a neighbor to help out (doorbell ringing and all) the key is to get the dog to sit&stay before you open the door. Once the person is in if the dog jumps, give the "off" or "down" command (whichever you choose) and then make the dog leave the area. DO NOT PET THE DOG OR LET THE GUEST PET THE DOG!!!!!!!! If he jumps and you correct him and then pet him you have just reinforced the jumping. The dog thinks he is getting praise (petting/ attention) for getting off the person. Therefore the next time someone comes he will jump to get the attention. If you remove the dog from the situation and everyone ignores him, he will not jump because he wants to stay and get praise.

When I was about four, my parents bought a Miniature Schnauzer from a breeder with the intent of possibly showing her. Well, that idea went over like a fart in church. While she could execute all of the commands at home, she was hopeless around other dogs. It was one long ADHD fueled bunghole sniffing party for her. She was asked to leave the class. :true:

We stopped taking our dog to obedience school because she wouldn't stop barking at the other dogs and it was really embarrassing for us. The other dogs were all paying attention, and the instructor would put barriers up around our dog to try to calm her down but nothing worked. He seemed exasperated and it was painful for us every week so we gave up.

Yes and no. Patterson went to an entire course, but it was cut short when we found out he needed a new hip asap. We have a certificate to go back, and now that he is better can do it anytime. I train him at home, but need help with the no jumping when people come in the door and stop barking!
