When Can I Take a Puppy Home?

Do Tell: Did You Meet Your Pup Before His Homecoming Date?

Some people have the pick of the litter . . . literally! With breeders and broods born in shelters, many times the pups are available for viewing before they're ready for the taking. I actually saw pics of North's family shortly after birth — three girls and one boy — then met them a bit later to pick him out and took my bundle of joy home a couple weeks after that. We just went to a breeder yesterday to pick out our first dog. After playing with all of them, we picked him out and get to bring him home in 3 weeks. He's a puggle and I can't wait!

My first choice would have been a rescue dog, but there were too many variables for that to happen. So, after researching breeders my husband and I went up to meet her, see her farm, meet the pregnant mom and the dad (a total rascal), and confirm in my heart this was no puppy mill. After confirming that she is one incredibly awesome woman and caring breeder we put in a down payment for first pick of the litter. She sent photos 1 week after the pups were born (she refused to separate them from mom before that.) It took my husband and I about 1 second to know which boy was ours. She then sent up weekly pictures and updates. She still checks in on him from time to time. I would always recommend rescues first, but if that is not an option please please please research your breeder!!
