Would You Call Your Grown Dog a Puppy?

Over the weekend, I told someone I just met that I had a puppy when asked if I had roommates. My pal overheard and was quick to point out that North is a grown dog.

I wasn't being intentionally deceitful (after all my parents still refer to only-child-me as "the baby" and I'm far from it), and I meant it more affectionately than realistically. Do you ever refer to your pet as a puppy, kitten or other (dare I say) pet names regardless of age? Shh, the poll's anonymous so your secret's safe with me.

Oh, and my kitty has lots of pet names! His name if Felix, but I call him FeeFee, Feefurson (sounds just like it's spelled) and Felix pie. He comes to all of them, which is silly. :)

Whenever I see a dog I always say "look at the puppy!" even though you can tell the dog is full grown.

My dog is so little (8 pounds) that most of us refer to him as a puppy or a pup, he doesn't seem like a "dog" he's more like our child!

People call my dog Scout a puppy all the time, even though she's 11 and has lots of gray on her muzzle. She's still a puppy at heart though!

I call our cat, Jasmine, 'Kitten' or 'KittenGirl' all the time and she just had her 18th birthday last week.

I called my Duchess Darlene Doggie a puppy until the day she died; she was 16. I tell people that as long as you call them puppies, they have no idea how old they are so they'll stay around longer. I know it's not true, but it works in my head and sometimes that's all that matters.

Zena has so many pet names I'm surprised she responds to them all! There's Zeener, Z, ZZ, Zen, Psycho, Psycho Dog, Baby Girl, Puppy Dog, the list goes on. I've always called my dogs doggies or puppies. >.<

It's cute as a tearm of endearment but i guess if you're talkign to someone it's a little misleading. Saying you have a kitten or a puppy might make the person think you just got it recently. Not that it matters but I guess in conversation using dog or cat for adult pets just explains the situation better.

I'm out of town and I miss my puppy! (he is actually still a puppy, but I called the dog we had before him a puppy all his life). It's a term of affection, not a statement of age for me :-)

I still call my parents' 11 year old Jack Russell a puppy, but maybe it's just because he's a fairly small dog.

I say, unless they have had puppies/kittens of their own then they are always allowed to be puppies/kittens themselves. (Same goes for people). My (not so) puppy is neutered so he'll always be my puppy!

I do. Nike is 5 years old and 75 pounds and I still call her a pup. It's just my affection for her. I remember picking her up at the SPCA when she was just a merely 4 pounds of wonderful little puppy with massive paws and a wet nose. I still call my 5 year old cats- kittens. Although my vet says my cats are entering their adolescent years. Uggh, teenagers.

I lovingly call Eegor a puppy, even though he's not technically a puppy anymore. He definitely still acts like one though! However, I don't call him a puppy to other people... too confusing.
