A Shelter Cat Had to Be Put Into Solitary Confinement Because He Kept Freeing His Friends

Nov 17 2019 - 8:25am

Cat people know that every feline has their very own personality [1]. Some sleep all day, others destroy everything in their wake, and apparently, a rescue cat named Quilty prefers to spend his days freeing all his fellow kitties at the Friends For Life shelter [2] in Houston. According to the rescue group's Facebook account, Quilty had somehow been managing to open doors within the shelter to let cats out of their respective rooms. So Quilty was subsequently placed in solitary confinement for quite literally rescuing rescue cats.

On Oct. 29, Friends For Life shared what was going on with this particularly naughty kitty, and given how absurd the situation is, it quickly caught people's attention. "Quilty will not be contained [3]. And he has no shame," the post read. "Quilty loves to let cats out of the senior room. Repeatedly. Several times a day. We have since Quilty-proofed the cat room while he took a brief hiatus in the lobby. His roommates missed him while he was banished to the lobby. They enjoyed their nighttime escapades around the shelter. The staff, however, did not miss the morning cat wrangling, so we'll just have to agree to disagree there."

According to the volunteers at the shelter, this clever habit was something Quilty picked up with his previous owners. "Apparently this is not a new skill he learned here at the shelter; he used to let his dog sibling in the house at his old home," the post said. "If someone out there is looking for a clever cat that gets along with dogs but does not get along with closed doors, we have someone they really need to come and meet. Please. Come meet him. And take him home. Please."

To keep all Quilty's friends — ahem, coconspirators — safe, the shelter staff had to keep him in the integration kennel. Miffed that he couldn't carry out his devious plans, Quilty had apparently turned into quite the "spicy a-hole." In a hilarious update, the staff shared that Quilty eventually had a parole board hearing and was denied. Like the true con artist he is, he was "released himself on his [own] recognizance" and successfully broke out of the integration kennel . . . multiple times. According to the comments section, Quilty could not be contained. He also made several escape attempts from cat jail and has even attempted to break out of a window.

While we're borderline obsessed with Quilty — he is the definition of an absolute legend [5] — and all his badness, we hope he finds a forever home ASAP. Currently, he's spending a week with a family to see if they're meant to be, so Quilty might be getting human companions soon, after all! And FYI: if you love Quilty's story, to raise money for animals in need, Friends For Life released a full line of #FreeQuilty gear [6], and it's really stinkin' cute.
