Considering the great dane can stand as tall as 32 inches [1] at the shoulder, it's no wonder that some people find this giant of a breed pretty intimidating. However, this imposing pup (which is known as the "Apollo of dogs") only looks scary, as great danes have a reputation for being quite sweet [2] and docile. These gentle giants are most easily recognized for their muscular bodies, expressive faces, and — of course — their towering height. Their coats can come in six different colors [3], including fawn, brindle, blue, black, harlequin, and mantle.
