You've Never Seen Disneyland Like This — and We're Not Sure You'd Want To

Aug 20 2015 - 2:45pm

UK street artist Banksy, who's known to stir up controversy with his satirical work and graffiti, has outdone himself with Dismaland [1], an apocalyptic play off of the happiest place on Earth. Think Disneyland, but much, much more grim. Screaming babies and Disney princesses — at least nondistorted ones — will probably be absent from this amusement park.

His pop-up art exhibition will take over an abandoned beach resort in Weston-super-Mare, UK, using the Tropicana pool as the Cinderella castle-like waterfront. But instead of finding Ariel in her grotto, guests will find a warped-looking princess mermaid posed in front of the rundown castle. Interested yet?

In addition to Banksy's 10 pieces that will be shown, works of over 50 artists, including Damien Hirst, Pure Evil, and Espo, will be featured throughout the 2.5-acre site [2]. The park's attractions spew the same dark humor that Banksy is acclaimed (and criticized) for, like a surgeon-looking murderer on a carousel and a police truck water slide. With a motto that's sort of like Disney's ("a festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism"), the "bemusement park" will also offer live performances, works that call for audience participation, an outdoor cinema [3], and more.

Dismaland will be open to the public for five weeks only, from Aug. 22 to Sept. 27. But based on its website . . .

"Contains uneven floor surfaces, extensive use of strobe lighting, imagery unsuitable for small children and swearing. The following are strictly prohibited in the Park — spray paint, marker pens, knives and legal representatives of the Walt Disney Corporation."

. . . it might be best to leave the kids at home. Take a look ahead for what else you can expect there.
