Los Angeles

Nothing spells glamour like Los Angeles. Make a weekend of it and kick off the New Year's Eve festivities (NYE falls on a Sunday this year) at Beverly Hills's La Scala, the festive, family-run Italian bistro. Sunday afternoon, head to the Waldorf Astoria for a New Year's Eve day Nutcracker tea. Drop into Musso and Frank's Grill, Hollywood's oldest restaurant (founded in 1919) to sip predinner martinis, just as the old-Hollywood set did. To ring in the New Year, Dita Von Teese headlines at the Ace Hotel's gala for New Year's Eve. Watch the ball drop by the Christmas tree at the Ronald Reagan Library Museum while the band The Platinum Groove plays. The Montage Beverly Hills, The Beverly Hilton, and the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills will also offer prix fixe dinners with Champagne toasts and music to bring in the new year in style. The iconic pink Beverly Hills Hotel offers two menus, which will create a memorable send-off for 2017, and hosts its signature New Year's Day brunch to feed that hangover.

The clock in Madrid's Puerta del Sol Square is where thousands of people dressed up with hats, bangers, trumpets, and masks gather on Dec. 31 to see the new year. After the Spanish tradition of the eating of the 12 grapes, happiness and excitement take over the square, which turns into a giant party with confetti, streamers, and music.

Experience the fireworks that happen in different neighborhoods around Istanbul — for example, in the Fatih district, where people watch the display from the famous Galata Tower, with beautiful mosques on the horizon. Take a Bosphorus river cruise for New Year's Eve, heading down the banks of the Bosphorus with a view of the Bosphorus Bridge.

The Big Easy always does a party right, particularly on New Year's Eve. One of the city's most glamorous galas is at the Hyatt Regency in downtown New Orleans. Also, many local musicians play around the city on New Year's Eve, including The Revitalists at the Orpheum Theater and Tank and the Bangas at The Joy Theater. For an annual tradition with some New Orleans flair, make your way to Jackson Square in the hours leading up to midnight for live music, a view of the fleur-de-lis drop, and a fireworks show.
