Sometimes the best way to cope with troubling situations is through laughter. I was invited by Canon to the Groundlings theater [1] in LA to see how bullied kids channel their tough experiences into stand-up comedy. It's all a part of Canon's Rebel With a Cause campaign [2] that profiles modern-day rebels who challenge convention in their own unique way.
Canon partnered with YouTube creator and antibullying advocate Anna Akana [3] for the program. The star shared her personal story about her sister's suicide as a result of bullying. She now uses comedy as therapy, so her ability to make light of difficult topics made her a perfect choice as a Rebel With a Cause.
Anna worked with the Groundlings comedy troupe to teach bullied teens how to use comedy based on their own life experiences. Once the teens created stand-up routines, friends and family came to watch them perform. The show gave these kids the confidence and positive reinforcement they deserve. Watch the inspiring video above to watch their journeys.
