Old millennials [1] probably remember the game Jungle Hunt [2] on Atari — or an old-school Apple computer, if you're me. It's that one where you had to make the little man jump from swinging vine to swinging vine. Little did you know, there's a cenote, or sinkhole, in Mexico that strongly resembles that video game setting.
Cenote Ik Kil is a beautiful swimming hole that's sunken down into the land in the Yucatan Peninsula near Chichen Itza. Here, visitors can climb the stairs down into the water, where catfish swim and Mayans performed spiritual rituals. Overhead, countless vines hang down, just like in Jungle Hunt, though I probably wouldn't recommend you actually try swinging from them.
Visiting this stunning oasis is actually pretty easy, as it's smack in the middle of the Ik Kil Archeological Park [3], which is very easy to take a bus tour to. So, if the swinging vines from your childhood don't inspire you enough to visit this place, the sheer beauty of it should.
