Citizens For Retiring the Penny

Stop and Smell the Pennies

It seems like one by one, the penny haters are emerging from the cracks and making their stance known. First it was Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, then Senator Barack Obama, and most recently Stephen Colbert interviewed Jeff Gore who's the founder of Citizens for Retiring the Penny. His main arguments against the penny are that it costs more than a penny to make a penny and that it takes a lot of time to handle the penny during cash transactions. Colbert and Gore address corresponding issues like how we'd adapt to life without pennies and the fate of take-a-penny-leave-a-penny dishes. Watch:

this is ridiculous... then they are going to raise the rates for all things... gas is going to go up five cents, not two cents.. like i need that right now we lose money. the hard workers. I support obama but if this is what he supports then forget it. I'm off the bandwagon. If they are going to round down then i'll support no pennies. However, I doubt businesses are going to want to do that. They will have to round up.

So what is the post office going to do? I'm sure everyone would go nuts every time they had to change their rates by five cents. People go nuts when they raise it 2 cents. But they base everything off of the penny. I'm sure other businesses do it too. They don't bother me because I don't use cash.

All pennies are good for in my life is spilling out of my wallet and rolling all over supermarket floors. I wouldn't mind getting rid of them. It's not like we live in the world of three-cent candy, anyway.

Considering I rarely use cash as it is, I'm all for decluttering and simplifying currency.

I like collecting the penny but with less of them around I'd just get more nickels which I never seem to have enough of. It's a win-win situation for me. Either way, I'm fine.
