The Ultimate Coastal California Road Trip

May 29 2018 - 1:26pm

If there's any one state to take a lengthy drive in, let the coast of California [1] sweep you off your feet wheels. Much has been said about the Golden State, and for good reason — the sheer diversity of the region will blow you away. Ahead are 10 stops to make along the coast of California.

Crescent City

The small, charming town of Crescent City [3] on the northern tip of California boasts a rich cultural history. Be sure to check out the postcard-perfect St. George Reef Lighthouse, which was built in 1892 and provides guidance to sailors on a reef six miles offshore.

King Range National Conservation Area

Considered to be a "spectacular" meeting of land and sea, the highest peak of the King Range National Conservation Area [4] is just three miles off the Pacific and towers at 4,088 feet. It expands over 68,000 acres and 35 miles, so you'll have to take a few back roads to reach the range. And while you're close by, check out the Humboldt Redwoods State Park [5] — the trees are a California staple.

Santa Rosa

Sonoma County is known for its beautiful vineyards. In Santa Rosa, stop for a glass of Rosé at one of two dozen wineries [6]. Afterward, browse the Charles M. Schulz Museum [7], which displays an enormous collection of Peanuts comics from the beloved cartoonist.

San Francisco

The world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Dolores Park, the Painted Ladies at Alamo Square, and the California Academy of Sciences [8] are just a few things to explore in lively, offbeat San Francisco [9]. At the end of the day, dine like a queen or king in one of SF's many top-tier cultural restaurants.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Big Sur [10], the scenic stretch of central California coast, is sure to keep you busy — especially if you're a nature-lover. Art galleries, boutique shops, and white sandy beaches define Carmel-by-the Sea [11], located a couple hours south of San Francisco. Consider resting for a night at a lovely little inn or quaint cottage near the ocean, where you can catch a refreshing salty breeze any time of day or night. And if you find yourself with extra energy, grab a day pass to the Monterey Bay Aquarium [12], about a 20-minute drive away from Carmel.

Morro Bay

Outdoor adventure awaits you in Morro Bay [13]! First, hop on a bay cruise [14] — you'll be given the chance to explore a sand pit and take pictures of sea otters and sea lions. Next, take a hike up Black Hill for a stunning view of the water, and finally, have a barbeque with friends along the Cloisters Park Trail.

Santa Barbara

The sophisticated Spanish vibes of Santa Barbara [15] will rope you in and never let go. Browse the open-air mall, pick up a trinket from a surf shop on State Street, go for drinks in the eclectic Funk Zone, and catch the sunset while paddleboarding in Butterfly Bay.

Malibu

Make sure your beach bag is packed [16] before stopping by Malibu [17]. Explore the high bluffs and caves at El Matador, and soak up the sun in a wooden lounge chair at Paradise Cove.

Catalina Island

Get away from the sometimes-overwhelming buzz of Southern California's mainland with a day trip to Catalina Island [18], which you can reach by ferry. The water is picturesque, the locals are friendly, and the rustic village life of Two Harbors is a must-have experience.

San Diego

A stop in San Diego [19] is the perfect way to end your coastal California vacation. Spend some time in Balboa Park, which is home to 15 museums, beautiful gardens, and other recreational attractions. Gamble in a Vegas-style casino [20], drink craft beer at a quality brewpub, and spot gray or blue whales on a professional tour to top off an amazing trip.
