Drink Before You Go Out to Save Money

Money Tip: Drink Before You Go Out

Obviously, this is only a good tip if you don't have to drive anywhere. That being said, this weekend bring back the good old college pregame to avoid spending too much when you're out. If you have a drink before you leave home then you're likely to save money by ordering at least one less drink from the bar. And if you live in an expensive city like I do, the amount you can save on one drink could just about pay for brunch the next morning. Cheers!

If you "pre-game" you might also be more likely to order more drinks and more food while you're out, upping the cost and calorie content. Beyond that, I never did pre-gaming because I wasn't out to get smashed and use it as an excuse for stupid behavior. Guess I had better things to do with my time.

I just did this on Saturday and its usually our ritual to have a bottle of champ while we get ready & before wh hit the town. And whats wrong with a buzz? I know getting wasted and out of control is not good and I dont drink to get that way BUT I dont see anything wrong with enjoying drinking and the feeling you get from it.

Drinks at restaurants and clubs always seem either watered down or mixed with something else. Whenever I drink at a restaurant or a club I end up with a really bad headache the next day. This has happened to me even at the priciest restaurants. I would much rather drink a couple of glasses of wine at home before I go out and not end up with a headache the following day. At least I know what I'm drinking and saving a bit of money.

This advice is funny to me because I always remember my parents traveling with a bottle and having a drink and nuts in the room so that they didn't order one in the restaurant. It was to save money, of course. And they did the same thing at home... At the time I thought it was "old fogey" behavior. My strategies for saving money on alcohol: (1) find good restaurants without liquor licenses so you can BYO wine or whatever (some restaurants with a license will let you bring a bottle of wine, but may charge a corkage fee, so check first), (2) learn to enjoy beer, and drink beer when the wine is expensive. I've become a beer buff, not something that most women are. Also beer won't get you drunk as fast as wine or hard stuff, or (3) just skip the beer, wine and mixed drinks (maybe having one at home first) and watch how much your bill goes down.

Oh uptown girl, we're one in the same. I got a flask in my stocking this Christmas, but I've yet to take it out... soon, though :)

I think that you can have a few drinks before you go out and then if you want more drinks later than you can go back home to do it.

I'm like Tami. Last time my gfs & I all got together I pre-drank at the house and only spent a TOTAL of $30 I had in cash! And that included having to pay cover to get in at one bar! The flask in my purse did help a lil bit later on in the night too though! Gosh... I sound like an alcoholic! Let me say though, I only get to see these girls 3-4 times a year, and therefore I don't go out and get crazy like that very often! And I'm 24. (excuses, excuses)

I totally do this, although I rarely drink these days.

Oh, I totally do this...although it's usually only a glass of wine before we go. When I was younger and used to go out to the bars all the time, my friends and I would get ready together and have a few drinks beforehand. Definitely saves some $$!

It's good to drink before going out, but not to drink and drive!

Yeah I agree tdamji ... drinking to get messed up gets old after a certain age, a glass of wine or two now and again is fine, if you are staying home but to have to start drinking before you go out .. thats odd to me. To each is own I guess. Never had that problem though..

We are all about drinking before hitting the town at our house. I pretty much HATE spending money on drinks so I figure if I have a couple of glasses of wine at home I will need find less people to buy me drinks at the bar. :) Plus, it makes the getting ready wiht the roommates part more fun.

doesn't this imply that people only drink for the "buzz"? sad.

I always drink while I'm getting ready, too. It makes it more fun :) And I save a bunch of money doing this. Last weekend when I pre-gamed, I spend about $30 at the club. The time before without cocktails at home, I spent a whopping $70!

I agree with remedios. I still do it anyway though. In theory it's a good idea, so I'll keep practicing it until it works ;)

I do this ALL the time...we always have a DD, of course, but yeah...I like gettin my buzz on when I'm getting ready...I get all giggly and excited for the night. And instead of drinking, we end up dancing the alcohol off :)

I've found that doesn't cut down on my bill when I'm out. It just gets me drunker.
