Consider the Basics
So you want to start a book club? Take some time to iron out a few details before you start recruiting people. Here are some of the basic things you should consider when you're starting out:
- The goal. Do you want this to be a gathering of friends who enjoy reading, or are you interested in making new book buddies who happen to like the same genre? Decide what you want to get out of the book club so it’ll make it easier to figure the theme of the book club and the audience.
- Theme. Now that you’ve figured out what your goals are, decide on the theme. Perhaps you want to mimic the Oprah book club picks, or you’d like to stick to Twilight-type paranormal books. It's also a good idea to change up the theme every month.
- Ask around. Reach out to fellow book-lovers that are in your network. Ask them to refer more friends to the club if you’re lacking in members. A good number to have at a book club would be about five to eight people, but it also depends on your venue. It’s nice to have a group below 10 people so everyone will get their turn to speak.
