No Air Conditioning? No Problem — Here Are 12 Ways to Stay Cool This Summer

Jul 21 2016 - 7:30am

Sometimes that Summer heat [1] can seriously drive you nuts. If you don't have air conditioning in your home, that can make it even worse. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to stay cool during the warm months [2]. We have some excellent tips on how to keep comfortable when you're AC-free. Check them out!

  1. Use fewer appliances. Using appliances [3] like ovens, stoves, or even lamps will give off heat. Unplug them to help cool down your home.
  2. Put a bowl of ice in front of a fan. The wind created by the fan will absorb the coolness from the water as it melts, making the breeze nice and icy.
  3. Keep your bed lower to the ground. Heat rises, so the lower you are, the cooler you will be.
  4. Apply ice to your pulse points. By putting ice where your pulse points are, you will cool down your entire body. Put cold items on you wrists, behind your knees, or on the inside of your elbows.
  5. Install lighter-colored blinds. Shades in light colors tend to reflect the heat to the outside rather than absorbing it.
  6. Put your sheets in the freezer. Pop your sheets in a plastic bag and place them in the freezer for 15 minutes. When you put them on your bed, you'll cool down in no time.
  7. Stay hydrated. Drink a glass of water [4] before going to sleep — you will feel more comfortable when it starts to get hot at night because you'll be hydrated.
  8. Open the windows at night. Circulate cold air by leaving the windows open while you sleep [5]. Don't open your windows during the day, because you can let warm air in.
  9. Spray down the outside walls and roof. Using water on the outside surfaces of your house will cool down the whole place.
  10. Soak your feet in ice water. Your feet have a lot of pulse points, so sitting and soaking your feet [6] in water can cool down your entire body.
  11. Plant trees right outside of your home. They will provide shade.
  12. Stick a frozen water bottle under your pillow. Fill up a water bottle and stick it in the freezer. Once it hardens, lay it by your back to stay cold.
