Iceland's Currency Has Plunged Against the Dollar

Savvy Solution: If the Alps Are Out of the Question, Here's Where to Travel

YumSugar is always in good spirits, but her mood is even better than usual because of some recent news about Iceland. She's been wishing to revisit the country since her first fantastic vacation there in 2005, but her only gripe about the trip has also been the only thing preventing her from going back. She said, "It was a billion times more expensive than anyplace I'd ever been," but now that Iceland's currency has plunged against the dollar she can plan another trip!

The global credit-crunch has made its way into this country with a population smaller than Pittsburgh, and has caused Iceland's krona to plunge against the dollar this year. This is in stark contrast to the euro's upward trend that has held American travelers back from European excursions, but has brought a flood of euro carrying travelers on stateside shopping tours.

Wondering what it would be like to vacation in Iceland? Here's what Yum had to say: "I went on a snow-dog excursion, drove snowmobiles on a glacier, and traveled around on tiny roads that made it feel like we were on the moon." She also generously shared some of her photos — I never considered including Iceland on my list of places to visit, but her pictures have definitely caused me to reconsider! Check them out when you

The pics are really pretty, but personally I was never interested in visiting Iceland...i'm more a fan of beach vacations, tropical getaways, and shopping trips.

Thanks for liking the photos. I knew I would like it there, but didn't think I'd love it. It was the most amazing place I've been fortunate enough to go to — and, I've been lucky enough to have done some interesting traveling. The people were so friendly, reykjavik is a party town! and then outside of reykjavik is so isolated and awesome. i tell everyone i know, GO TO ICELAND! so great! and now that it's cheaper, you have no excuse!

Great news on the exchange rate! I'm planning on taking a boat from the Orkney Islands (Scotland) to Ireland in the spring of 2009! Should be pretty epic.

Figuratively, of course. Straying off a real path is Alaska can be deadly!

Iceland has always looked just like Alaska to me. May not be a foreign nation, but it's definitely another world up there. I highly encourage visiting, and straying off the beaten path.

Great pics. I know someone who vacationed there and it was funny cause he took a picture near one of the volcanic steamy lakes with people in the background in bathing suits and he's in the foreground bundled up from head to toe.
