I'm Asking: What's the Longest You've Been Unemployed?

Getting laid off and going through the process of filing for unemployment and looking for a new job is never a walk in the park, and the experience often becomes more painful as time ticks on and you remain jobless. That being said, there are millions of reasons some people remain unemployed for lengthy amounts of time. Sometimes we take time off to go back to school or get additional certifications, have children or raise a family, or simply take a breather between jobs or careers for reflection and goal setting while a partner carries us financially or we live off savings.

What is the longest you've ever been unemployed, whether planned or unplanned?

there was a point where i was working only my pt. time job (the one for fun) and that was it. that lasted about a year. i was doing temp work and anything else i could get. i'm not sure how i paid the bills, because my family would NOT help. their position was "come home, it's free here". yeah, no thanks :)

I've been unemployed for 10 months now. 8 months of that i was caring for my grandma though and then decided to give myself a break for a month or two after she passed away, i've really only started looking for work this week.

A little more than 3 months between my last internship after grad school and when I started temping, which led to my current full-time job.

8 months, from June of 07 to February of 08. I was looking for employment the entire time and had a bunch of interviews, but it was just a REALLY slow time in the job-hunting world for me.

Currently, I've been unemployed since May of last year, so yeah. Here's hoping I find something soon!

6 months just last year. I did odd jobs and temp work during that time, but nothing steady or fulfilling. I moved to Seattle and got a job here before the recession hit and have managed to hang onto it. The current economy is definitely scary.

I think the longest was approx 4 months. This was about 7 years ago and I remember that I goofed off for 3 months and then got serious about finding a job.

Kind of hard to figure out, as being freelance is code for unemployed. Probably a few months, then work, then a few months.
