I'm Asking: When Are You Not Available?

I'm Asking: When Are You Not Available?

Finding a happy medium between work and your personal life is a complicated balancing act that can take years to perfect.

The fact that 46 percent of you recently said you have trouble saying "No" to work got me thinking about when I chose to draw the line on what's my time.

I carry my BlackBerry with me in the evenings and on weekends and try to keep up with important emails from work, but I'm not afraid to click "mark as unread" when an email is non-urgent and deal with it at a more appropriate time. When are you not available?

Before 9am or after 7pm during the week.. I have to be available on Saturdays because I'm a Realtor and most people need to look on Saturdays and I rarely come in on Sundays and if I do, I better be making a commission lol!-

I don't check my email when I'm not at the office, but I'm available by phone 24-7. That doesn't mean I'll answer, but I do get work related calls on my off hours. I also get phone calls when I'm on vacation - Again, choosing when I answer is up to me!

I'm with hippie cowgirl. I am unavailable about 10 minutes before the end of day ;) In my opinion, until they pay me like my skills and my time are so freaking valuable to them, I'm not going to drop everything and do something for someone that can wait until next day, next week, after lunch, whatever. If I'm so important to my job, then they need to show me the money first!

I'm paid to work 8AM-5PM. That is the time I am available. However, I don't have a problem is someone calls me while I'm on vacation to ask an urgent question. I usually let VM get it when I see it's a call from work. I'll check the message and return the call if it's something that truly needs my attention.

i'm definitely trying to find the happy median there. while i was on vacation for a week i still checked all my emails - and i'm sure that i would have survived without doing so - but i didn't want to miss something major or come back to 300+ emails.

Anytime between 6:00 PM and 7:00 AM on weekdays and the whole weekend. I can be bad about consistently checking my work e-mail, though.

I really try to not be available once I leave the office or shut down the office computer. However, some of my coworkers are on my facebook, gtalk, etc so if something really urgent comes up, they can, and do, get a hold of me that way. Luckily it hasn't been too much of a nuisance yet....

when i am at work from 6:30-5, my work has my full attention. however, when 5 o'clock hits, there is nothing that is so important that it can't wait until 6:30am the next day. 5pm to 10pm is my time the rest of the time is for sleep.
