10 Stores That Offer Price Adjustments and Price Matching

Have you ever purchased something full price and returned to the store a day later to find the very same item on sale? Price adjustments are just good customer service. If I can walk in, buy the item at the sale price and return it on my first, full price sales receipt, I should be able to get a price adjustment. I was just in PetSmart today trying to get a price adjustment on a fish filter I purchased a week ago. WORST.EXPERIENCE.EVER. First, the cashiers had no idea, sent me over to the fish area. Waited forever there, then that guy had no idea. He sent me to the manager, who told me that she would do it "this one time" but they normally don't do it. Why? "Because dog beds are going on sale to clear out for Christmas" WTF? My purchase is NOT a season item, it just so happens that you put it on sale less than a week after I purchased it. I can't predict when you will be putting things on sale. It would have been much quicker for me to buy a new one, walk out the store, walk back in and return it on my old receipt.

Nordstrom is one of the most customer focused retailers in the industry. While their documented price adjustment policy is 2 weeks and is similar to a lot of retailers, in practice they often adjust prices on items that had a price drop even a few months after the original purchase (you just have to ask.) One of the issues that shoppers face is the difficulty finding when the price dropped on any of the items they purchased. One strategy is to check periodically after the purchase, but then you might miss some of the flash sales, one day sales, or weekend sales. For online purchases a shopper can use a service like that tracks the prices of purchased items for additional price drops and then alerts the shopper. It is really simple to use, all that is needed is just to forward the online receipt to and the price tracking starts immediately. The Nordstrom price adjustment policy as documented on their site on 7/23/11 is below: Sale Adjustment If an item you have purchased is reduced in price within two weeks of your order date, we will happily adjust the sale price for you. Please note that we can only make one sale adjustment per item and designer goods originally purchased on sale are excluded.

At Sears last year I got a price match on an HDTV and then an additional 10% off. It was pretty sweet.

Costco does price adjustments and I think they do it for much longer than 14 days.

I've done price adjustments at GAP, Anthropologie, and Hollister several times, and they never gave me trouble. I think most stores have a policy like this, except for the disposable fashion store Forever21.

i've never been lucky enough to be successful in the whole price adjustment /matching thing but i think that it's only good business to do that. we all realize that you can get similar products everywhere and that retailers mark things up - so it's only right to have prices adjusted if that's the case.

I bet most stores would if you ask. I never think about clothing stores, but I think of it for places like Target.

Thanks for the tip, chocolat! And I was going to say the same thing as snarky, pretty much every store offers some sort of price adjustments. I can't think of a store that doesn't.

HHGregg has one of the *best* versions of this. They have a 30-day best price guarantee- you get the lower price on an item that is sold either by them OR by their competitors within 30 days of your purchase, plus 10% of the difference. They honor this in-store even if the sale price is current at their competitor. That means if you know Walmart has the TV you want on super-sale, but you hate buying from Walmart, you can walk into the HHGregg and show them the Walmart ad and they will sell it to you for that price. And that is how I got my 42' flat screen. :-)
