Savvy Savings Challenge: Give Up a Spendy Vice For Lent

Today is Ash Wednesday and marks the first day of Lent. Whether you observe it for religious reasons or not, the 40 days offer a feasible time frame to give up a vice and learn to sacrifice in the name of something bigger. I am not a practicing Christian, but I am hereby committing to giving up my unnecessary spending — most notably I won't be driving to work for convenience or clothes shopping — from today until Easter. It's not going to be easy, but I know it will be worth it and I'll be sharing my experience with you all for inspiration and encouragement.

And so, I challenge you, SavvySugar readers, to join in my budget-boosting effort and cut your most harmful and indulgent money habit for the next 40 days! Join my Savvy Savings Challenge and share what you plan on giving up, then update the group daily or weekly with your pitfalls and success stories. The community and I will be your personal cheerleaders!

I love this idea! I just read this blog post and I realized that I may have "shopaholic" tendencies. It really freaked me out, but I'm going to try my best to stick to this challenge!

I'm giving up Netflix and going to the movies for 40 days. Whew! I feel a little faint. Thanks to my local library I can rent movies for free.

I gave up eating out so much and I bring my own towel to gym and use a reusable water bottle instead of getting a new plastic bottle everytime.

I think I'll give up eating out three times a week. That adds up quick in expensive San Francisco.
