Standing-Room Seating on Planes

Standing-Room Seating on Planes: Brilliant or Baffling?

If you think coach seats are uncomfortable, think how stiff your legs would feel after standing for an entire flight. China's Spring Airlines is considering selling standing-room seats to fulfill growing demand and spokesman Zhang Wuan explained, "It's just like bar stools. The safety belt is the the most important thing. It will still be fastened around the waist."

These so-called standing-room seats might not lead to pins and needles in your legs, but probably a bit of discomfort in the tush. However, implementing the idea would allow the airline to accommodate 40 percent more passengers per flight, reduce costs by 20 percent, and customers would enjoy lower airfares. What do you think of the concept for standing-room seating — is it brilliant or baffling?

that's just baffling. how can it be safe? i get that they would have safety belts around your waist - but stools aren't safe even when you're 'firmly planted on the ground' . i don't know - i can't say that i'd be into flying that way - even if it's for a short flight.

What a safety hazard nightmare! What happens during takeoff, landing and turbulence? Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

There would have to be some temporary seating during take off and landing for safety reasons.

If they do implement something like this, it'd only be practical for short little 1-hour or shorter commuter flights. I like to think I have a lot of stamina, but even I would be dying if I had to stand during a trans-Atlantic flight or something longer than say, 3 hours or so.

hmm.. I've been known to sit on a bar stool for 3 hours or so, so I think I'd go for this, assuming flights of less than 3 hours (ideally 2 hours or less), AND that there is a type of bar there to lean on and not just an entire section with just stools.

It seems kind of crazy. I mean, if it was an hour flight, that would be fine, but imagine standing all the way to Paris? Yipes. No matter how much I love a bargain, I don't think I could do that.
