Nothing pisses me off more than a third of my hard-earned money is going to causes (ahem, wanting to bomb the entire mid east into oblivion) that I don't support.

I think "married filing jointly" is usually best for most married couples, unless you really don't want to be responsible for your spouse's taxes or you have a ton of itemized deductions. If you are "married filing separately," you might not be eligible for the same amount of deductions that "married filing jointly" couples can get.
