11 Smells You Don't Notice (but Everyone Else Does)

Everyone has their own "scent," but yours? Well, it might be getting a little out of hand. That's why we partnered with P&G and Lowe's to help you clean up your act.

Your vacation was awesome, but smelling the litter box first thing isn't the welcome home you were expecting. Before firing your cat sitter, it's time to face the facts. Your place smells. You smell, too. It's an odd phenomenon, but your brain and nose work together determining scents as nonthreatening after sniffing for prolonged periods, stopping your offensive-scent alarm from triggering. Here are a few unwanted smells that might be welcoming your guests with a few tips for making things better.

We all love our pets, but Fido's lingering scent isn't so inviting. If your dog is allowed on furniture, it's a smart idea to vacuum areas he likes to frequent before guests arrive. And don't forget about his doggy bed — toss it in the wash for a quick refreshing.

Last Night's Drinks

A drink is much deserved after a long day, but leaving out bottles or glasses makes your space smell like a bar — even when those bottles are collected in the recycling bin. If possible, dispose of bottles outdoors and make sure to clean spills as soon as they happen.

Yes, dinner from last night was delicious, but no one wants to smell garlic and onions first thing — unless you're cooking for guests! Invest in a closed-lid garbage can for your kitchen and toss dishes in the dishwasher once you're finished eating.

Your Perfume

You hit the middle of the day and aren't getting that lovely waft of fragrance, so the next day you just spritz a few more times to keep yourself smelling wonderful. Actually, nope. You might not be smelling it, but your signature scent is still going strong on you and in your home. Follow these directions for perfectly applying perfume.

If you take off your shoes when entering your space, they are the first thing your guests are greeted with. Get in the habit of putting shoes away in a closed closet once you get home, which also clears clutter.

I have two cats, so finding a way to keep the home from smelling of all things kitty is tough. Cleaning the box daily is a must, and giving the litter area a complete cleaning once a month also keeps smells down.

Everyone has their own personal scent, which isn't a bad thing. If you're regularly washing and properly adorning yourself with scents, you might not pick up on what you are wafting. Keeping up with your laundry helps your personal scent from overpowering your space.

Scented Candles

There's nothing wrong with a few scented candles to set the mood, but when those smells clash or are overpowering, they can really be a turnoff. If you love having candles glowing, go with unscented ones, or pick a scent profile, like vanilla and citrus, which work together instead of battling each other.

Your Fireplace

Your Fireplace

We love enjoying a fire on cool nights, but those embers and not-completely-burnt logs can make your entire home smell like a campout. Only add logs when others are just about burnt out, and clean ashes at least once a month — once a week if you enjoy a fire every day. And investing in glass doors with a vent fan allows you to enjoy the toasty fire while keeping fireplace smells enclosed.

Another item that often gets stashed right next to your front door, workout gear should be stored out of sight to keep smells from being a problem.

You've been standing over your sink washing dishes forever, but when a guest comes over and helps out rinsing dishes, she might be thanked with musky or sour scents. Your garbage disposal is so helpful, so giving it a regular cleaning keeps smells from wafting.
